Spiritus Mortis - The God Behind The God, Into The Warzone

Spiritus Mortis - The God Behind The God, Enslain Magazine #10
Although having started already in 1987 as Finland's first doom metal band, The God Behind the God is but the third full-length of Spiritus Mortis, and the first one with their new singer Sami Hynninen. Being a big fan of his work with Reverend Bizarre, and particularly fond of his voice, he seemed like a worthy successor to Vesa Lampi, although I was still a little skeptic of how he would fit in Spiritus Mortis, who were strongly personified by Vesa's majestic voice and stage presence.
After being able to look past the new style of vocals, one will notice that the compositions are still the good old Maijala brothers quality, varying from faster pieces like the crushing opener "The Man of Steel" to the rocking mid-tempo hammering of "The Rotting Trophy", and from the hazy moods of "Heavy Drinker" to the slowly crawling darkness of the title track. Somehow it seems that whether the material is fast, slow or dark, it's accomplishing that more extremely than before. The vocals play a big part in giving this impression, for example, getting really harsh and sinister at times. Although Spiritus Mortis are primarily a traditional doom band, a fair share of classic heavy metal mood and melody is also present, particularly in their more up-tempo cuts. While the majority of the tracks are still moderately-lengthed, some of them are remarkably longer than on previous albums, like the nearly 12-minute title track, which is a fine example of building up atmosphere without just running in place.
The vocals are much more varied than before, consisting not only of various ranges of clean vocals, but also whispered and spoken passages, high growls, harsh yells, and golem-like chants, all carefully arranged to fit the moods created by the music and lyrics. Besides his huge contribution in the vocal department, Sami seems to have had an improving effect on the lyrical and visual side of the band as well, resulting in an aesthetically more developed outcome.
While I still occasionally find myself missing Vesa's vocal style, and have to sometimes remind myself during "Curved Horizon" that I'm not listening to Reverend Bizarre, in a way, Sami has lifted Spiritus Mortis to a new level. I can only hope that their line-up and label troubles are behind, and they finally gain the acknowledgement they deserve as the Finnish pioneers of their genre.

Spiritus Mortis - The God Behind The God, Blastbeat.nl

Never think you know em all! This Finnish band is already formed in ’87! The have done two albums on Rage Of Achilles and Black Lotus, but I first hear of them with this third album on Firebox. I think it’s a nince band, maybe the singer could be more darker, more mournfull, so I’m not certain if it’s to melodramatic or not. But really not bad either..

Spiritus Mortis - The God Behind The God, Quintessence.ch
Spiritus Mortis has been around since 1987 and the label claims that theyre the oldest doom metal band from Finland. They could be right, but thats a fact that Im not interested in. Its without any doubt however that they were not really successful in the past. They only released 2 studio albums, despite their high quality music. Due to all this, vocalist Vesa Lampi left the band.
But the band continued writing new songs and in 2009 they found a new vocalist and that man is one of the most famous in the doom scene, namely Sami Hynninen who we all know from the mighty Reverend Bizarre (Albert Witchfinder) and The Puritan. As the music was already written,  the influence from Sami isnt that big on their sound. Musically its a continuation of “Fallen”, but more pure and heavier. There are really some good songs on it which have a great rocking vibe. Besides that, there are also some slow and darker songs on it, like Death Bride and Curved Horizon.
“The God Behind The God” has become a very good heavy/doom metal album and hopefully the band gets its recognition. They are on tour in October this year. Check them out then and until then spent your time listening to this album.

If you were to browse the shelves of your very favorite CD shop, there's a good chance that Spiritus Mortis would not jump out at you for any particular reason. Perhaps if you know that former Reverend Bizarre vocalist Sir Albert Witchfinder or simply Sami Hynninen  is singing in Spiritus Mortis at the moment, you'd know to pause at this strange, black skull cover, design by Sami himself. However, if you knew nothing of that connection, you may very well just pass on to the next CD on the shelf.
More focused and better produced than their previous albums, The God Behind The God is a 8-song ride into the world and visions of this Finnish five-piece.Naturally, those familiar with Reverend Bizarre will immediately notice the similarities, most obviously the vocals. The up-tempo crackers ”Man of steel” and “Perpetual motion” are a rush of power metal adrenaline throughout its entire duration. “Death bride”, “Curved horizon” and “The god behind the god”  are moody and epicful but warm and inviting. The melodies are slightly obscured, but still fairly powerful throughout, as Sami is a capable frontman for this style of music. The playing is excellent, and the production lets them all shine through. Song structures are quite simple, but there are plenty of tempo changes to keep things interesting, and the drumming is solid and powerful at every speed. Cool riffs, too, even if they're nothing fancy.

Spiritus Mortis - The God Behind The God, DreunWebzine
Productioneel is 'The God Behind The God' zeer goed. De liefhebbers weten hier vast raad mee.

Spiritus Mortis - The God Behind The God, Roarezine
Zo ook 'The God Behind The God', waarvan alleen de tweede helft echt interessant is. "There is none beside me / I am the Lord" is een tekst waarvan de rillingen over je rug gaan lopen.
The God Behind The God is een lastig album.

Spiritus Mortis - The God Behind The God, MariosMetalMania
After a series of split releases, Finnish doomsters Spiritus Mortis are back with their third full length album. I reviewed their 2006 release called "Fallen" and now its time to see what has changed and what remained the same.
The opener "The Man of Steel" storms its way through the speakers! This is a heavy and fast track, more in the Grand Magus vein and less in the traditional Spiritus Mortis doom sound. A killer tune indeed. The second track is a classic S.M. song. Slow and heavy as hell. The album continues in a slow and dark manner and closes with another fast and heavy tune called "Perpatual Motion"! What a way to start and finish a doom metal album! The new singer is probably the best the band ever had. Melodic and heavy at the same time. Spiritus Mortis has done it again. This is another great traditional doom metal album. Candlemass would be proud.

Spiritus Mortis - The God Behind The God, DigitalSteel
Spiritus Mortis is a band from Finland, already founded in 1987. The God behind the God is, after a bunch of demos, the 3rd album of this doom metal band and I must say they definitely should have some more attention. The CD opens with Man of Steel, not really a doom song, rather an up tempo battle song in the vein of the good Manowar stuff. But don’t get fooled by the first song, from track 2 Death Bride on Spiritus Mortis delivers some pure slow and grinding doom!! The new vocalist Sami Hynninen (Reverend Bizarre, The Puritan) does a great job, ranging from clean to quit harsh vocals when it’s required. Like The Rotting Trophy has some more King Diamond-ish singing parts in it, great song!! Doom albums often are hard to keep interest for the full track list, but The God behind the God has enough variation to keep you hooked for the full album. Like Heavy Drinker is a more Trouble-styled song with some 70’s vibe in it , creamed with a great guitar solo. To finish of the album they do the same as the starting track; Perpetual Motion is a more up tempo song again, great for breaking the tension of the album. Again I must say, a traditional doom/ heavy metal band band that needs a lot more attention!

Spiritus Mortis - The God Behind The God, Tempelores
The traditional doom metal band Spiritus Mortis from Finland released their third album “The God Behind God”.
The band god announced as Finland’s oldest doom metal band, which surely brings up a lot of expectations. Seeing their discography, Finland was not ready for their music in the past, as they have a long list with demo’s before it actually came to an full length album release. When it comes to the release of “The God Behind God” I firstly stumbled upon the title. I’m not too impressed when people always search things behind something, as a wise men learned me: “Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar”. A little more faith may do great for self conscience. And that is exactly what I missed in this album. It surely has the element that you cannot miss out on at a decent doom album but it does not have balls. Where is the strenght, where is the conviction? Riffs try to catch you with sharp edges but they aren’t memorable. Drums just are there to back it up instead of being a great add to the doom atmosphere. Vocals are various, not too stereotype for doom which speaks positive for the band as the rest of their sound did not completely convince me.
The album is not complete crap, but it is not a diamond either. This album does not stick out above the average and that is not only because the expectation were set high, but just because this isn’t the new big thing in doom.

Spiritus Mortis - The God Behind The God, DisAgreement.net
Not everyone can claim to be the oldest doom metal band from Finland. Spiritus Mortis were founded in 1987, although it took them eight demos before their self-titled debut longplayer was released in 2004. The second album Fallen came two years later, to be followed by two split records. Maybe their new label – the prestigious Firefox Records – will help them gather international recognition with their third album The God Behind The God.
Since Spiritus Mortis’ inception more than two decades ago, Finland has seen the rise of many doom bands, but the pioneers certainly don’t need to hide behind the ones that succeeded them. The CD starts with The Man Of Steel (with three minutes the shortest track featured), a quite powerful metal song whose mid-tempo delivery is actually quite untypical for the band. The next eight minutes see the quintet slow down considerably on the crawling Death Bride. There seems to be a pattern here. Spiritus Mortis alternate between moderately fast power metal tracks and longer doom metal elaborations that can also be savoured on Curved Horizon (eight and a half minutes long) and the title track which constitutes with nearly twelve minutes the album’s longest piece and also features a spoken word part.
Doom metal has, like so many other genres, developed into many different sub-directions, but Spiritus Mortis still play it as it was done in its beginnings. This means that they are musically closer to Saint Vitus and Solitude Aeturnus than to contemporary slo-mo funeral bands. This makes The God Behind The God a somewhat old school album whose main charm lies in its basic production values and the pleasant mood swings. If you are of the persuasion that doom metal can never be faster than 60 bpm, then Spiritus Mortis may at times sound like a grindcore band to you, but those who grew up with the genre know perfectly well that this is how it all started out. This may not be a groundbreaking album, but it clearly displays that musicians’ years’ long experience. Recommended for everyone interested in the roots of this specific sub-genre of heavy metal music!

Spiritus Mortis - The God Behind The God, Metalrage.be
Yes, another Finnish doom metal band! But this time it is no newcomer to the scene. In fact Spiritus Mortis is the oldest doom metal band from that particular country. Formed in 1987, the band has released numerous (eight to be exact) demo records, yet this is only their third full length record. I really wonder what that says about the band, being around for that long but not releasing a full length record until 2004. Oh well, let’s review The God Behind The God.
Spiritus Mortis plays doom metal in the traditional vein, which means it sounds like bands such as Black Sabbath, Pentagram, Cathedral, Candlemass, Trouble and Solitude Aeternus to name a few. The band recruited a new vocalist this year, and it is none other than Reverend Bizarre vocalist Sami Hynninen. His band quit two years ago, so I guess he was a natural choice for the band to pick. Also his voice fits the music really well, Sami has an epic voice which he can use in both a low and high pitch, creating the suiting dynamics vocally. Musically the tempo goes from dramatically slow to slightly up-tempo, just like most of the bands mentioned above.
Overall the production of this record is quite fine, and also the songs have been written in a good traditional fashion. This makes it a nice listen for every fan of this type of doom metal and I advise all to check them out if it appeals to you.

Spiritus Mortis - The God Behind The God, MetalNose.org
Spiritus Mortis is hailed as the oldest doom metal band of Finland. Most probably they are, since the band was already founded in 1987 by the brothers Jussi (guitars) and Teemu (bass) Maijala. Unfortunately we cannot talk about a very successful career. No less than eight demos were released, but except for some positive reviews, the result was none. The self-titled debut was released on Rage Of Achilles, this label stopped its activities. Successor ‘Fallen’ (2006) came out at Black Lotus Records. They went bankrupt. Is it a wonder that the then vocalist Vesa Lampi lost his interest in music and quit the band?
But there is also some good news: Spiritus Mortis did two tours (‘Friends Of Hell’ and ‘Friends Of Hell II’ with Reverend Bizarre and Minotauri) and the twentieth anniversary was celebrated with a tour with stand-in vocalist Tomi Murtomäki, but after that tour he refused to stay. For this album ‘The God Behind The Gods’, instruments were recorded long before a new singer came into sight. A deal with Firebox Records was inked and early 2009 the news was spread that they had recruited Sami Hynninen, better known as Albert Witchfinder of Reverend Bizarre, to complete the picture. A cult icon behind the microphone… I’m thrilled to hear the result.
First of all, Spiritus Mortis was not intimidated by the presence of Hynninen. The music itself is a rather logical sequel of ‘Fallen’. Several songs are longer though and the use of piano/keyboards is reduced to a minimum. The vintage feel remained, in recording techniques as well as in general mood. It makes ‘The God Behind The Gods’ an album that halts between two opinions: on one side we have the smooth rocking tunes deeply rooted into traditional hard rock with vintage overtones (‘The Rotting Trophy’, the Danzig-allied ‘Heavy Drinker’ and the closing track ‘Perpetual Motion’). On the other hand we meet with long (traditional) doom epics such as ‘Death Bride’ (a stunning composition), ‘Curved Horizon’ (also pretty well, mark the sonorous harmony vocals) and the theatrical and monotonous title track. This one includes a dark speech which is very captivating. One might call the lively guitar soloing in the faster tracks pure heavy metal. I do have to admit that I think the best songs are at the beginning of the album. The sturdy metal hymn ‘The Man Of Steel’ (hail Manowar) and the dramatic ‘Death Bride’ really impressed me, vocal-wise as well, but later on these expectations are scarcely redeemed. Just as with ‘Fallen’ I conclude that ‘The God Behind The Gods’ has its moments of magic, but it also includes a number of mediocre tracks. I hope that the presence of Hynninen can give more recognition to this self-willed band. A European tour is planned for October 2009.

Spiritus Mortis - The God Behind The God, Hellspawn.be

Spiritus Mortis - The God Behind The God, MusicInBelgium
The God Behind The God".
Merci Spiritus Mortis !

Spiritus Mortis - The God Behind The God, PsychotropicZone
Alkuun on osuvasti pistetty nopeampi, tuplabassareitakin sisältävä ja raskaasti rokkaava ”Man of Steel”, josta löytyy rankasta ulkokuoresta huolimatta myös melodiaa. ”When the Wind Howled with a Human Voice” on todella raskasta ja hidasta perinteistä doom metallia maailmanlopun meiningillä. The God Behind the God on todellakin pakkohankinta kaikille doom metallin ystäville, ja bändi kannattaa käydä katsastamassa myös livenä!

Spiritus Mortis - The God Behind The God, PsychotropicZone
Spiritus Mortis is probably the oldest doom metal band in Finland and their biggest idols are Celtic Frost, Venom and Black Sabbath. Despite their long career the band haven’t been able to release that many official albums. When the legendary Reverend Bizarre broke up a few years ago the fans were desperate. Their desperation must have been somewhat eased by the fact the their guitarist formed a new traditional doom band Lord Vicar and luckily also their singer/bassist Sami ”Albert Witchfinder” Hynninen has been involved in several projects like The Puritan. In addition Sami joined Spiritus Mortis as their lead singer and the guy’s powerful and barren voice is very well suited for the band’s gloomy and heavy music.
The new The God Behind the God album that’s also available on vinyl now has eight tracks and also Sami had his hand on the writing process. Right in the beginning they wisely put a faster, heavily rocking “Man of Steel” that also has double bass drums and in spite of its hard exterior also some melody. In addition, the track has razor sharp riffing and steely vocals; you just can’t help digging it. The slow and gloomy “Death Bride” is already basic doom with melancholy melodies bringing to mind Candlemass, for example. In the middle the track cools down, and we also hear some acoustic guitar and whispering narration. The mood is really desolate and dark, just like it should be… There is still one faster metal part with a solo at the end. Great track! The mid-tempo ”The Rotting Trophy” includes a really cool riff, strong vocals, rough going and a tight guitar solo. The bit Saint Vitus styled, slow “Curved Horizon” comes next. The going gets more atmospheric for a while and there is an excellent harmony vocals thing towards the end. ”When the Wind Howled with a Human Voice” is really heavy and sluggish traditional doom metal with the end of the world mentality. The mid-paced “Heavy Drinker” rides forward with a Trouble styled rhythm and indeed is about the curse of alcohol. The most epic piece on the album is the almost 12-minute-long title track that redefines what really slow and heavy doom is. The lyrics are a good example of the insane, occult-oriented inner world of Mr. Hynninen… At around the seven-and-a-half-minute marker the guitars fade out and we get some very intimate sounding reading instead. Soon the guitars join the narration and the whole works out really well! They have saved the bit Manilla Road spirited heavy metal piece ”Perpetual Motion” till the end, and it finishes off the album with a heavy hand. The God Behind the God really is a must-have for all the doom metal fans and they should also check out the band live!

Spiritus Mortis - The God Behind The God, Interregnummusik
Wonach klingt eine Titelzeile wie „The Man Of Steel“? Richtig.

Spiritus Mortis - The God Behind The God, VS-webzine
The god behind the god ».
A l’image des paroles de « The Man of Steel » : “Forever going, never stopping, never surrendering, extreme in brillance and courage ». Tout est dit.

Spiritus Mortis - The God Behind The God, Gray Day Zine
ME GUSTA:
ME DISGUSTA:
3.The Rotting Trophy
7.The God Behind The God

ALBUM OF THE MONTH!

Spiritus Mortis - The God Behind The God, Kulturterrorismus.de
The God behind the God.

Spiritus Mortis - The God Behind The God, Thoughts of Metal
The Finnish Doom Metal band SPIRITUS MORTIS saw the light of day in 1987. Since then the band has released lots of demos and took their time for the debut album, "Spiritus Mortis", which came out in 2004. Line-up changes also occured - it seems no band, or almost none, is free from that. It's via their sophomore album, "Fallen" (2006), that I first heard about this band. What I heard was qualitative Doom Metal. Two split releases and a single later the band's third album, "The God Behind The God" is now available and out since the 26th of June via a new label, Firebox Records. New label, in that Rage Of Achilles went bankrupt after the release of the debut album, Black Lotus Records also had to close the books after a little while, so let's hope Firebox Records does not undergo the same fate. Two more line-up changes took place the last two years: vocalist Vesa Lampi left in August 2007 and a new, full-time vocalist was found in Sami Hynninen aka Albert Witchfinder from REVEREND BIZARRE. He joined in January 2009. Guitarist VP Rapo also left a few years ago and was replaced by Kari Lavila.
"The God Behind The God" contains eight tracks, totalling a playtime of a good 45 minutes. It kicks off with the rather fast - for Doom standards - "The Man Of Steel". This sounds like NWOBHM meets Doom Metal and you could compare it to old CANDLEMASS, but even to SOLITUDE AETURNUS. The musicianship is outstanding, be it guitars (rhythm and leads), vocals or drums. And since there's a new vocalist, I have to say that Sami has done a terrific job here. His voice is clean, but powerful and he's not afraid to even throw in some high-pitched screams reminiscent in a way of Rob Halford. Only Rob's are sharper, clearer. The very good production helps to make everything shine. A pity the song only lasts less than 3 minutes.
Since we're dealing with a Doom band, there have to be slow songs, too, and long songs. And sometimes both are united. One example is "Death Bride", clocking in shortly before the 8th-minute marker. Think of the two best (in my humble opinion) traditional/epic Doom Metal bands (CANDLEMASS and SOLITUDE AETURNUS) and throw in a slab of BLACK SABBATH. The music is very much Doom, with a feeling of being lost. The SOLITUDE AETURNUS influence comes out very strongly in the verses and Sami once again offers nothing but the best he can do. Around the fourth minute all falls away and it's just the bass that left. Little by little more is added, like the accoustic guitar, then the drums. The atmosphere of solitude is stressed at this point and Sami's singing sounds a bit as if going mad, before *bam*, the NWOBHM/Doom kicks in. Or better, think of old SAVATAGE (1980's era). Absolutely splendid result here. Even the vocals are somewhat reminiscent.
While I'm at it, more Doom can be heard in "Curved Horizon", "When The Wind Howled" and "The God Behind The God". The tempo goes from sloooow to slooow to slooooooow. I don't know if that helps to give you a better impression, but let me put it like this: "Curved Horizon" starts with the guitars in the back, waiting to come to the front, which they do shortly afterwards. I apologise for the name-dropping, but since it's what my ears tell me and to give an indication of how it sounds, it must be done. The BLACK-SABBATH-meets-SOLITUDE-AETURNUS influences are omnipresent again, which is good (or bad, if you don't like these bands, but then you won't like SPIRITUS MORTIS either). Sami sings ina hymnic manner this time. The guitars are active in both variants, electric and accoustic with the latter providing some leads. Since this track ends around 08:30 lots of attention can be spent on instrumentalism. Cherry on the cake is the part that start between the 6th and 7th minute where not in the least Sami delivers the goods.
"When The Wind Howled" is a more active song, though the tempo remains slow. The guitars are given a heavier sound and that helps a lot to create a dark atmosphere. The vocal deliverance is quite versatile this time, stiff on one occasion, clean/loose on another, whereas in other songs Sami tends to stick to one type of singing. Either way, another qualitative result. No complaints whatsoever. And then there's that other superslow song, "The God Behind The God", which probably the slowest track on the album. With a playtime of almost 12 minutes it sure crawls forward at a... ehum, rapid, pace. The music comes fading at Funeral Doom speed and sounds like the already named Epic Doom Metal bands. Sami's voice is inline with the monotony of the guitars, yet change to some sort of speech in the second half, as if preaching. All in all another very good song.
The remainder consists of more active songs, starting with "The Rotting Trophy". This is another midtempo track, reminiscent musically of BLACK SABBATH/HEAVEN AND HELL. Sami's singing has a feeling of despair, of madness, but it fits with the heavy guitarwork. Jarkko's drumming is quite active as he makes good use of his kit (incl. toms and cymbals). The only thing that bothered me is that this song, too, ends too soon and quite abruptly. Add a few more minutes (two-three) and that would be it, even if the delivered result is very good already. "Heavy Drinker" is a Bluesy midtempo song. Clean vocals, solos in between, music reminiscent of BLACK-SABBATH-meets-SOLITUDE-AETURNUS or similar, of course. Unfortunately this track, too, ends in a sudden way. Or is there something wrong with my ears? Last but not least there's the rocking and uptempo "Perpetual Motion". The title already says it and the music adds to that, providing a more Rock feeling with adapated (i.e. rough) singing. Quite nice, though not exactly SPIRITUS MORTIS's speciality, in my opinion.
"Spiritus Mortis" and "Fallen" were good to very good albums, but "The God Behind The God" is it even more. The line-up changes didn't have any effect or maybe a positive effect, even if the music was written before Sami joined on vocals. Since his voice - different than what he did in REVEREND BIZARRE, as he really amazed me here, more than before - matches so good with the music, this leads me to believe the guys already had him in mind when they were writing this third album. The fact remains that SPIRITUS MORTIS is a must for any fan of Traditional/Epic Doom Metal and with "The God Behind The God" they have delivered their best album... in my opinion. Definitely one of the best Doom releases of this year, not in the least due to its diversity.

Spiritus Mortis - The God Behind The God, Metal Temple
Even though I’ve heard of SPIRITUS MORTIS in the past, this is the first time I come across them. And how couldn’t I hear that name before since, we are talking for the oldest doom Metal band from Finland!?!
Well, SPIRITUS MORTIS was born in 1987 by the Maijala brothers under the name RIGOR MORTIS, but they changed it because another band from the U.S.A. had that name too. Tomi Murtomaki came a few years later to stand behind the microphone, since Teemu wanted to concentrate on his bass. Tomi left the band after the anniversary "20 years of SM" tour, due to "motivational problems". Through this years, they have released more than half a dozen of demos, but only two splits, one single and "The God Behind The God" is just their third full release!
When I started listening to the album, I was a bit confused. "The Man Of Steel" is far from being called a Doom Metal track. You could say that it sounds mostly as an epic Metal song. To tell you the truth, I didn’t like it and I was, once again, ready to take my shovel out of its case. Fortunately for my ears and this review, things got better with "Death Bride", a song based on "The Mysteries"Miguel Serrano and one of my favorites of the album. It smells doom from miles away, with its heavy starting riff and the voice of Sami Hynninen (aka Albert Witchfinder, ex – REVEREND BIZARRE) screaming, whispering or singing with his distinctive voice. The other compositions are following the typical doom Metal style, something not bad in general but I wanted to listen to something more, since I think they can make that step. And I’m more sure about this when I listened to the Danzig-like "Heavy Drinker" that is a good song.
Overall "The God Behind The God" is a nice Doom Metal album, but not something extraordinary. Without the intention to say anything bad about the work of the other four guys, Sami’s voice makes the difference in this album. Nice ideas, one or two nice songs, but I think they can do even better. Nevertheless I hope that doomsters that are not familiar with SPIRITUS MORTIS will get to know them with this album.

Spiritus Mortis - The God Behind The God, Gothtronic
This band, existent since 1987, is by releasing this God Behind The God album giving a first impression on the bands’ whereabouts. The band, like others in its genre, has had numerous line-up changes and has been touring around from record label to record label. This isn’t quite surprising because of the nature of the record industries. At the moment Spiritus Mortis is operating through Firebox Records at their home station Finland. Also the band has got a new singer, Sami Hynninen (formerly known from The Puritan). In characteristics the band hasn’t drastically changed. The band is a doom-metal band with input from old school heavy metal, the band is inspired by works from Venom, Celtic Frost, and naturally just like all doom-metal bands: Black Sabbath.
I find this album containing eight tracks rather strangely built. The album starts off with cleanly vocalized metal with a high tendency to mid-eighties heavy metal. Actually the first songs’ title already gives it away: “The Man of Steel”. The same kind of music comes back at the ending of the album in the song “Perpetual Motion”. The heart of this God Behind The God album contains the band playing more grim, slower songs, still having powerful and clean vocals. The middle section of the album makes you think it’s a mixture of Slayer with My Dying Bride. In line-up the band has got one singer, two guitarists, a bass and one drummer. This represents the old-school nature of the band. No room for keyboards on this release, it’s metal in its pure form.
Since the band has been existent for quite a while now, this album well-connects to the bands’ audience. The music is somewhat old-fashioned, there are no death grunts on this album, and the band uses a lot of double guitar play to emphasize a mixture of rhythm and melody. This rhythm is slow, but not as slow as most modern doom-metal bands. The album’s second song “Death Bride” is a good example of this.
In lyrical content the band shows richness, but not in the kind of way other bands do it (so it’s not like: “write down your own thoughts, and get a synonym list next to it to discover beautiful words”). The band writes semi-deep lyrics with a sense of misanthropy, a sense of wonder, and a sense of dualism. An exception on this is the clearly Finnish song “Heavy Drinker”, which in sound is actually way more happy than the rest of the clearly Finnish songs. Another song standing out is the album’s title track “God Behind The God”, this song reminds to cleaner songs from My Dying Bride, and closes with a long speech that is somewhat eclectic in nature, and contains a lot of elements a lot of people would recognize.
In my opinion Spiritus Mortis is not much renewing its’ genre, but knows how to reach metal fans that have been around for a while. The bands’ lack of inventiveness would be appreciated by quite a few people, since most bands have lately started using grunts or keys in their music, and some people don’t even find this a necessity. The music is old fashioned, but fits in all times.

Spiritus Mortis - The God Behind The God, Vertigo
Tämän vuoden alkupuoliskolle oli ominaista kauan toimineiden, mutta vähän levyttäneiden suomalaisten metalbändien uudet julkaisut. Spiritus Mortisin lisäksi myös Sacred Crucifix ja National Napalm Syndicate saivat uutta materiaalia pihalle. Spiritus Mortis ei jää ainakaan tämän joukon heikoimmaksi.
Alavudella 1987 perustettu Spiritus Mortis on doom-yhtye, joka tykkää soittaa heavy metallia. The God Behind The Godin avausraita kuulostaa melkein Manowarilta ja heti seuraava biisi Death Bride tuntuu olevan tunnelmallinen jumitus. Pitkästä kappaleesta kehittyy kuitenkin kiehtova esitys, joka kantaa läpi kestonsa vaivatta. The Rotting Trophyssa annetaan kitaran laulaa hienosti. Vasta neljäs biisi, Curved Horizon doomailee sillä tavalla kuin aiemmin lupailtiin. Varsinainen hidas jyrä on kuitenkin toiseksi viimeiseksi jätetty nimibiisi lähes 12 minuutin kestossaan.
Pitkään kuvioissa ollut bändi on luomisvoimassaan uransa huipulla, varsinkin kun uusi laulaja Sami Hynninen on ehkä yksilötasolla The God Behind The Godin suurin tähti.

Jene Wunderscheibe bietet so ziemlich alles, was den Begriff „Doom“ umfasst.

Spiritus Mortis - The God Behind The God, Born in Blood
I should know better by now, but I popped in to the pub a few nights back for last orders and this bald headed drunk guy with 'love' and 'hate' tattooed on his knuckles and a bone through his nose said "What's that you are listening to on your music player? I unwisely passed him my headphones. From that point on, no matter what I said, he'd say "Go home and rape your daughter". I'd say "So what do you think of it then?" and he'd say "Go home and rape your daughter". I'd say "It's Spiritus Mortis... Epic Stoner Doom", and he'd say "Go home and rape your daughter". Hmm, so I put my headphones back on and he'd say something to me. So, I'd take my headphones off and say "What?" and he'd say "Go home and rape your daughter". And the moral of this tale is....
And so we come to the Spiritus Mortis' new album 'Go home and rape your daughter', err, I mean 'The God Behind the God'. The music is vibrant and alive, full of energy. What really makes this album are the vocal melody lines, without them the songs would be only half complete, but also the way the vocals work with everything else. The band do play riffs of course, but a lot of the time they chug or add chord crashes and solos. The real structure of the songs, the tune if you will, is at least half delivered by the vocalist. The vocalist in question is Sami Hynninen who use to sing in Reverend Bizarre under the name Albert Witchfinder, and his deep crooning, melodic delivery hits the target perfectly.
With this album Spiritus Mortis demonstrate the power of the band with each member adding their bit and the whole ending up greater than the sum of the parts, and as a whole, this band and this album dish the doom, a mixture of epic galloping groove and slow punishing metal. I think the vocals are perhaps a little too forward in the mix and the bass a little too far back, but no doubt many will disagree. The musicianship is spot on, the guitar sound just destroys and the drums are very clever and imaginative.
This is very much an album of the Noughties and the main reference point has to be Reverend Bizarre, but you'd have to go back to 2003's 'Harbinger of Metal' to hear something of this standard. This album is the best thing Spiritus Mortis have done in my opinion, and has brought the best out of young Sami Albert whose delivery can be hit and miss sometimes. This is a wonderful album. Actually it's pretty much close to perfect as far as I can hear. Spiritus Mortis are born again!

Spiritus Mortis - The God Behind The God, A Disposition
The God Behind the God”.
“The God Behind the God” schmettert sogleich mit einem etwas ungewöhnlichen Opener, “The Man of Steel”, los.

Spiritus Mortis - The God Behind The God, musikreviews.de
So bleibt „The God Behind The God“ im Verlaufe der gesamten Spielzeit spannend und Hits gibt es genug – besonders empfohlen seien hiermit „The Man Of Steel“, das bereits von der 7-Inch bekannte „When The Wind Howled With A Humann Voice“ oder „The Rotting Trophy“. Hier ist Dauerrotation garantiert.

Spiritus Mortis - The God Behind The God, Scarred For Life

Spiritus Mortis - The God Behind The God, FuryRocks.com
From the ancient dark forest of Finland dooms the dark sound of Spiritus Mortis. The oldest doom metal band from Finland, founded in 1987. They started as a trio until in 1999 vocalist Vesa Lampi joined the band. But it took 17 years until their first complete debutalbum Spiritus Mortis saw the light.
Followed in 2006 by their second cd. Now it’s time for their third and most recent album The god behind the god. Their third album with their third recordlabel with their third vocalist Sami Hynninen. 333, the number of the …. The cd opens with an uptempo song The man of steel.
The tempo of the songs increases hard after that. The second song The death bride is a hymn, in which the love for the deceased bride is sung with a great honour. Music and lyrics are totally complementary and made this song complete. The dramatic side of life and dead is getting shaped in the four next songs.
Heavy grooves from Jussi Maijala and Kari Lavila on guitar are driving life slowly to the obscure abyss, supported by Teemu Maijla on bass and Jarkko Seppala on drums. And the lyrics of Sami preach damnation. After 6 songs I’m leaning back and listen to the titlesong that lasts almost 12 minutes.
The message in this song isn’t reach me anymore. It continues terribly slowly and I notice that my interest disappeared. Twelve minutes are too long for me. Gladly Spiritus Mortis ends the cd with a more uptempo song. Finally the feeling exists that I have may listened to a good doom metal cd.
This summer the guys of Spiritus Mortis will play some gigs in Finland. After that they will come over in october to spread out their dark blanket of sound all over Europe.

Spiritus Mortis - The God Behind The God, Stalkermusic.com
Jo päälle toistakymmentä vuotta yhtyeen omin sanoin Suomen kovinta metallia vääntävä Spiritus Mortis julkaisi toukokuussa uuden The God Behind The God levyn. Ja kyllä levy kerrassaan loistavaa vääntöä onkin. Tähän vaikuttaa, ainakin itselleni suurelta osin kokoonpanoon Vesa Lammen vokaaleissa korvannut Sami Hynninen jonka jotkut ehkä tuntevat Albert Wtitchfinderina Reverend Bizarresta. Muuten Spiritus Mortiksen kokoonpanoon kuuluu Jussi Maijala ja Kari Lavila kitarassa, Teemu Maijala bassossa ja Jarkko Seppälä rummuissa.
The God Behind The God levyssä on ehkä vuoden kovin avausraita The Man of Steel.
Seuraavat neljä raitaa Death Bride, Curved horizon sekä When the wind howled with a human voice edustavat taasen doompuolta sanan hienoimmassa merkityksessä.
Nimikappale The God behind the God onkin sitten melkein 11 minuuttia kunnon doompaatosta. Sanoitukset on aikalailla kohdillaan, uskonsa vakavasti ottavat hihhulit jättäkööt kappaleen ja osaltaan koko levyn väliin. Levyn päättävä Perpetual motion on hieno lopetus levylle, Man of steelin poljennon tapaan vauhdikkaampi veto.
Kokonaisuutena levy jättää hiukka sekaisen olon kuulijalleen. Suosittelen Reverend Bizarren, Lord Vicarin ja yleisesti doomin ja aiempiin Spiritus Mortikseen mieltyneille. Ehkä kuitenkin pienellä varauksella, aiemmasta bändin tuotannosta poiketaan ja yhtymäkohtia jo useaankin otteeseen mainittuun Reverend Bizarreen löytyy. Hieno levy kuitenkin!!

Spiritus Mortis - The God Behind The God, Doom-Metal.com
One cannot deny that Finnish Spiritus Mortis are a Doomed band in all aspect. For their 3rd album in their 22 years long career, they are again on a new label...their 3rd. And with a new singer...their 4th. But this singer is nothing else than Sir Albert Witchfinder, of Reverend Bizarre fame. Still, 'The God Behind The God' is not a new Reverend Bizarre-like album. Instead, the Finnish band deliver a good slab of Doom Metal the 80's way, as they usually do. The difference lies, of course, in the voice. But Albert does a good show in NOT sounding like in Reverend Bizarre. For here, his voice is more typically Heavy Metal...and boy, how it rocks big time.
'The God Behind The God' expand the musical universe of Spiritus Mortis, and that is always a good thing. The Metal here is darker than before, with hints of the NWOBHM ('Death Bride' could easily have been released by the young Iron Maiden, while 'The Man Of Steel' sounds like a Doom Metal version of the 'British Steel' era Judas Priest. Nothing to be shocked about, when you know that a song like 'The Man Of Steel' has its music written in 1987. And that is the major good point of this album : all along it sounds METAL, not simply Doom, but mixed with a bit of Dark Progressive elements.
Some songs, like 'Heavy Drinker', are pretty much fillers and drag down the whole quality of this release. But upon hearing the massive danse macabre–like groove of 'When The Winds Howled With A Human Voice' or 'The Rotting Trophy', one cannot help but think about how all this would make a perfect soundtrack for an old Hammer video. This is maybe the most simple and easy to grasp Doom album one could find this year, and a perfect point of entry into the genre for the newcomers. Sure, it’s not the new Reverend Bizarre. It's the new Spiritus Mortis, and trust me : never have the voices of the dead been so appealing.

Spiritus Mortis - The God Behind The God, LordsOfMetal.nl

Spiritus Mortis - The God Behind The God, MetalToInfinity.be
As written on the internet and info sheets delivered along with their third album and new album ''The God Behind The God'', oldest or most heavy band from Finland - well I actually don't care about that. True and cold hard fact is that the band remained who they were those days of early existence back in 1987. I've seen so many bands changing their way of Metal after a few years of existence - I can't deal that much with such attitude. Play music the way you like without chasing money or following trendy shit to walk staright in line with the mainstream! Metal music needs to be played from the heart and not with the intention so called grabbing cash!
Spiritus Mortis released several demo's in the beginning between 1990 and 2002 - then it was time for the real deal, a debut album that saw daylight in January 2004. This self titled full length got great reviews but the label Rage Of Achilles called it quits only a few months later on. Bitter pill to swallow for the band but they kept going on and hoped on better days / new label to find was a total priority. But they succeeded - next label in line was Black Lotus Records who released their second attack ''Fallen''. Guess what! Spiritus Mortis was hit by sad news again... the existence of this second founded label existed no longer. To speak of a bullshit kinda situation...
Due to all of this, some guys left the band while others teamed up such as a new singer was found by Sami Hynninen (Reverend Bizarre, Puritan). He joined forces with SM in January 2009 and I guess this was the start of a new life for the band. More than 2 decades into Doom Metal, struggling through rough times but where is a will to live - there is a will to survive. Spiritus Mortis signed at least a record deal with Finnish Firebox label - their third album is about to unleash but as reviewer you have the opportunity to pre-listen the album followed by posting the review online and so I did also.
I never heard of the band before so my curiosity was way up high - I'e played the CD for several times now to discuss the entire work in a most sincere way. First impression about these guys that I have to deal here with a great band anyway! First song 'The Man Of Steel' sounds heavy as can be, is more a full forced Heavy Metal than a Doom Metal song...bit in the vein of good old Dream Death of Penance, first song - first good impression. I have also an enormous admiration for the vocals. He has a warm (sometimes passionate), powerful and very well understandable voice - one of the indispensable pawns in the game he is! 'Death Bride' is a real low tempo played Doom Metal work with a great middle part and a fantastic last part including breath taking tempo changing and flammable solo.
I also can recommend 'The Rotting Trophy' featuring Memory Garden, Isole or Forsaken influences. Fans of Trouble will have a ball on 'Heavy Drinker' and the title track will captures you in its sharpened doomy claws for almost 12 minutes offering extra heavy chord guitar riffs, low tempi and great vocal use. But one of the best songs has yet to come - the last one 'Perpetual Motion' has a great and has a whipping rhythm on board. A excellent blend of Doom and Classic Heavy Metal sung with raw vocals - closing in an album this way out is just perfect!
I was unfamiliar with Spiritus Mortis until hearing their third album lately - now I can tell with conviction they're absolutely good playing highly recommended Doom / Heavy Metal music. I hope their current record label won't let them down in the future because I see some forms of potential lurking from behind. Spiritus Mortis - The God Behind The God, HeavyHardes.de
Gesanglich brennt hier also definitiv nichts an.

"The God Behind The God" ist ein weiteres Lehrstück in Sachen DOOM!

Spiritus Mortis - The God Behind The God, Metal.de

Spiritus Mortis - The God Behind The God, Metalzone.gr
After three years of waiting during which the band offered us 2 split releases and a 7”, the finish doom metal outfit Spiritus Mortis, have finally returned with a brand new album. First of all, I admit that I’ve been waiting this release with such an expectation since Spiritus Mortis is a band I really respect and suggest to anyone that really digs “proper” Doom Metal, to take a good listen to them. So, After their previous stunning albums “S/T” and “Fallen” (2004 and 2006) and having only some months before the release announcing the new vocalist of the band which is Sami Hynninen (A.K.A. Sir Albert Witchfinder, ex Reverend Bizarre), our need for pure, and straight doom metal, at last has been covered in the best possible way. Although the album’s starter (Man Of Steel) moves more into traditional heavy metal sound (Manowar) the album soon returns to the classic tortured doomed way of Spiritus Mortis playing, with boosted rhythm section, long tracks, some minimal melodic lines and of course tons of Sabbathic Riffing The only thing for sure is that for many Spiritus Mortis fans the participation of Sami in “The God Behind The God” would another one reason to purchase this album and I cant judge this in a negative way, because, we all agree that Vesa Lampi voice (ex vocalist of the band) was a characteristic one but in comparison to Sami’s voice, I believe that Vesa sounds a little more Rock N Roll, while Sami sounds more “tortured” and for example in tracks like “Curved Horizon”,”When the Wind Howled with a Human Voice ”, “The God Behind The God” , Sami’s vocals gives a greater boost. Well as an epilogue to this review I’d like to remind that Spiritus Mortis is the oldest doom metal band from Finland (1987) and from the deepest parts of my tortured soul I wish the band that this album would be the reason to become more known around the world… In Doom!

Spiritus Mortis - The God Behind The God, Peacedog.com
SPIRITUS MORTIS pioneered the heavy and true riffing methods of BLACK SABBATH and PENTAGRAM in Finland in the late 80s before anyone else, when other suburban kids were mostly going crazy over grindcore and death metal. Reigning in demo territory, SPIRITUS MORTIS remained sadly unrecognized for 15 years, failing to secure an album deal until "true doom" came into fashion again through the various campaigns of Rise Above, Miskatonic Foundation and other similar labels calling for resurrection of doom and proto-power metal. It represented perfect timing for these Finns' heavy, blunt mid-paced cross (an inverted one) of CANDLEMASS and MANOWAR. Practice had made them perfect so the two SPIRITUS MORTIS albums so far were absolutely gripping concoctions of barbaric heavy metal, thundering riffs, hard vocals and fantasy pulp poetry perfect for any fan of GATES OF SLUMBER or LAIR OF THE MINOTAUR. For the album under review the premier Finnish doom maniac Albert Witchfinder had replaced the possibly more memorable Vesa Lampi on vocals, causing apprehension that SPIRITUS is ever so slightly turning the way of run-of-the-mill doom, but on the other hand the connection with REVEREND BIZARRE coupled with the doomy zeitgeist might finally give some deserved fame for these conjurers of apocalyptic visions. Unfortunately, the portents of doom were right: the song material this time is mostly just adequate and not even close to the barbaric madness of prior efforts.
"The Man of Steel" is a surprisingly un-doomy fast and ripping opener where Albert throws in some gang shouts and Halford-inspired screams, dispelling the fears that it is he who will ruin this album by playing it safe. "Death Bride" continues the album with a beautiful and yearning piece resembling something lost and found from "Nightfall" era CANDLEMASS. So far, so good, but sadly this is a full length. "Curved Horizon" and the title track (including an impressive Hammer horror style narrative section) pack all the pomp and gloom of doom by the numbers while the only more heavy metallic piece besides the opening track is "Perpetual Motion", far from capturing the epic metal glory so prevalent on earlier SPIRITUS MORTIS works. The remaining tracks are passable, but sludgy and uneventful like some filler tracks from TROUBLE albums. Not to say there isn't a good idea or two, but still after weeks of listening it's hard to remember what else is relevant on this album beyond "The Man of Steel" and "Death Bride". Undoubtedly this is an album that will gain more easily the attention and affection of the audience for safe and generic doom but those who loved old SPIRITUS MORTIS for their un-trendy heavy metal find something lacking in this release even though in technical respects the band is playing with all the proficiency gained through their impressive longevity.

Spiritus Mortis - The God Behind The God, Noizz webzine

Spiritus Mortis - The God Behind The God, Lammas Zine
Vuonna 1987 perustettu Spiritus Mortis kuuluu ehdottomasti suomalaisen doom metallin parhaimmistoon. Nyt yhtyeeltä on tullut pihalle heidän kolmas pitkäsoitto “The God Behind The God”. Etenkin debyytti “Spiritus Mortis”.
Levy käynnistyy nopeahkolla The Man of Steel -kappaleella, joka laulujen lähtiessä ilmoille kuulostaa omaan korvaani vahvasti Candlemassilta. Toisesta kappaleesta, Death Bridesta eteenpäin levyn tempo putoaakin doomille olennaisiin lukemiin, eli alas. Uusi laulaja Sami Hynninen (Armanenschaft, Azrael Rising, The Candles Burning Blue) tuo kyllä lisää tunnelmaa yhtyeen tummanpuhuvaan hidasteluun, verrattuna Vesa Lammen aikaisiin julkaisuihin.
Kappale kuitenkin toimii erinomaisesti. Levyn seitsemäs kappale, joka on levyn nimikkobiisi, onkin sitten levyn kohokohta. Lähes 12 minuuttinen kappale onnistuu kyllä pysäyttämään ajan ja universumin täydellisesti. Kappaleen soidessa oli hieno vajota jonkinlaiseen transsitilaan. Mahtava kappale. Levyn päättävä Perpetual Motion on taas hieman nopeampi kappale, jonka rokkaava riffittely pitää otteessaan levyn loppuun asti.

1987 gegründet, ist „The God behind the God" erst das dritte (relativ) leicht zugängliche Werk.
Is' es.

Geil, klingt wie 80er-US Metal!

Spiritus Mortis - The God Behind The God, Bizarre Radio
Somit ist „The God Behind The God“ eine durchaus runde Sache geworden. Unbedingt mal anchecken!

Spiritus Mortisin kuulee olevan perustettu vuonna 1987.
Levyn pärähtäessä soimaan doom ei tule mieleenkään, sillä The Man of Steel avaa pelin pitäen tempon korkealla soiden jossain heavyn ja stonerin nurkilla. Koukkujakin piisaa, etupäässä vokalisti Sami Hynnisen teroittamia sellaisia. Toisaalla myös laahustaminen sujuu ansiokkaasti, kun When the Wind Howled With a Human Voice rakentuu maltilla, tunnelman kautta.
Tilanne on Spiritus Mortisille vaikea, sillä riffipohjaisissa biiseissä niiden riffien on vain toimittava, eikä pari päähän takertuvaa kertosäettäkään olisi seuraavalla albumilla pahitteeksi.

Spiritus Mortis - The God Behind The God, Soundi
Tuskin moni korvaansa lotkauttaa, kun muistutetaan Spiritus Mortisin olevan 22 vuotta vanha. Mutta ajatellaanpa asiaa vuonna 1987 ilmestyneiden levyjen kautta: Candlemassin Nightfall, Celtic Frostin Into The Pandemonium ja Sodomin Persecution Mania. Kyse on niin vanhasta orkesterista. Syntyaikojen tunnelma ja ajattelutapa on läsnä Spiritus Mortisin kolmannellakin levyllä. Jos soundeihin ei kiinnitettäisi huomiota The God Behind The God -levy voisi olla peräisin 90-luvun alusta.
Uusi laulaja Sami Hynninen työstää Spiritus Mortisissa vanhaa bändiään Reverend Bizarrea vauhdikkaampaa, rokkaavampaa ja nimenomaan helpommin lähestyttävää doomia. Armoitettu avausbiisi The Man Of Steel laukkaa troublemaisesti, bändi ujuttaa mukaan jopa kitaraharmoniaa ja Hynninen kiekaisee loppuun Halfordit.
